subtle and not that obvious...
I spent time with an old friend that i hadn't seen in years tonight. It was quite nice...like Caronport, I don't know too many people my age in Chilliwack, although i know there are many, i just don't know them, cos i've never lived here long term.
Shanda mentioned a saying that I want to clarify with my readers-the three of you out there. we were talking about the moon, and how it shrinks and grows. she called it "waxing(getting bigger) and waning(getting smaller). ermm...i kinda looked at her and wondered if she had gone over the deep end, being an E.R. nurse can make you go kookoo sometimes....but no...she insisted. its called "waxing" and "waning". any of you heard of that term before? click on the comments command at the bottom of this entry and tell us what you think!
i personally think it makes more sense if its "maxing" and "waning" but what does a city boy know about farming terms anyway??
i have a high respect for someone like Shandalin, she has lived in this community for all her life, and come to think of it, so have her parents. As I ponder about ministry and the necessity for long term commitment, I realise how much of a blessing that has been for her. sure sometimes, its a plain old drag. but in other ways, shanda knows so many people here and knows community life second to none. i moved so much in the last 15 years i've lost count. its just ridiculous. i yearn for that kind of experience...stability. its a rare thing these days, and i think its absolutely critical for effective, fruitful ministry.
we also marvelled at how much people change. its funny, when you're 20 you think you're set for life. and you know how you work and how the world works. but then you get to 25 and you realise that you've come such a long way from the person you used to be (hopefully). when we talked, I almost found like i was talking to a person who kinda retained the essence of everything wonderful about her uniqueness and beauty as a person(3 yrs ago), but on top (another layer perhaps you might call it) a layer of life experience and maturity. It was neat to see that today, and it could only have been that apparent to me if we had somehow managed to lose touch like we did. most friends i have...well you see them at least twice a year. so the changes are subtle and not that obvious.
this is one of the rare things on earth that is truly beautiful. The beauty of age and life experience. The beauty of a transformed life. hey i'm in BC...i see beauty all over. but this is something rare and wonderful. and leave it to God to "hide" it in the most accomplished of His creations. I'm feel really blessed to have uncovered beauty today. It shocked me, moved me, inspired me and caused me to understand the Creator in a deeper way.

Dell is going to post the origins of the Waxing and Waning you talked about. They are indeed the "proper" British terms, likely Saxon in origin but Dell will check that out. In most of the classic literature you will find the terms used quite frequently. More from Dell later...... Enjoying your blog!
PS Check out Isaac Watt's hymn, Jesus Shall Reign. The first verse goes like this:
Jesus shall reign. Where'er the sun,
Doth His successive journeys run.
His Kingdom reigns from shore to shore,
'Til moons shall wax and wane no more.
Nice job guys...thanks for the info...i'll let her know that she was correct!
i think i've heard of waning before in a poem by John Donne from the 17th century. but i can't remember. i think it was either "Mediatation 17" or something like that. (oh...OH that makes sense, John Donne was proly from the same era as Sue is talking about!)
either way, thanks for sharing your learning experiences.
say hi to vancouver people for me.
waxing and waning is not unfamiliar to me either

Hi Darrell,
I think I've met you a few times and found your blog 'cause it was one of Decker's links. Crazy thing is, I think I know Shandalin. I did my preceptorship at Chilliwack hospital in 2004 and I was always happy when she was on shift with me. I'm serving at the YWAM base in Jamaica right now but please tell Shandalin that Em says hello. Thanks.
Emese, with someone like shandalin, i guess you never really get her confused with some other shanda (unique name and person!) I've passed the message along, and will stay tuned to your blog about ministry in Jamaica. take care!
